Guest Blog Post:: The Christian Moms Business Resource

Hi Market Mommy Friends!

I’m excited to meet you all today! My name is MariLee Parrish and I own the Christian Moms Business Resource and also Mommy Bag Marketing.

Here’s a little background about my company:

The Christian Moms Business Resource (CMB Resource) was founded in 2009 to help other moms start and promote their own small businesses from home. From small business training and freelance writing resources to step-by-step instructions on using facebook and twitter for business, CMB Resource offers tried & true “ideas that work.” These include Small Business Ideas, Seminars, Free Webinars, PR & Advertising Packages for Mom Businesses, including participation in the Mommy Bags that are distributed nationally!

If you are a Christian Business Owner, we have tons of opportunities to help you get the word out about your product, event or service. If you’re interested in becoming a Mom Partner with us, you can view the details here.

We help you navigate social networking sites, we provide a forum to answer all of your questions, and we support one another as Christians in business. When you partner with us, you are immediately introduced to our network of Christian moms who come and fan your pages, follow you on twitter, and become your friend. It has been amazing to see the friendships and mentorships that have come about through our partnership. Our faith in God binds us all together in ways that other groups do not.

Our inspiration is the Proverbs 31 woman. Have you heard of her? Let me share a little bit this amazing woman:

'She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for the task. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night...She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.'
Proverbs 31:17-18,27-30

I must admit that I am a far cry from this strong woman, but it is my prayer that I can honor the Lord in all that I do and that my work would be pleasing to Him.

One more thing: Our blog is a fun way to connect with all of our Christian Mom Partners. We also host the Friday Favorites Giveaway each week. I hope you’ll stop by and see us at: www.wahmblog.info

Thanks for letting me share today! I hope to get to know you all better.

Blessings & thanks,

MariLee Parrish

Editorial Tips

| 2 comments

In last week’s newsletter I promised some more tips about how to use an editorial as a marketing tool. Typically, an editorial is used to express an opinion on an issue, or some type of reaction to current events. An editorial can inform, promote, commend or sometimes entertain.

If you feel exceptionally educated on a topic and it has a timely connection, you can write an editorial and submit it to publications.

First, choose a topic. Are you the head of a non-profit organization that funds volcano research? Then the recent volcanic ash in Iceland provides you with the perfect opportunity to write an editorial. Your topic must be relevant and newsworthy and you must be educated about the topic.

Second, do your research. If your company offers an herbal alternative to aspirin, make sure you have studies and stats on hand that will back up your argument. A piece that is not heavily based in fact will most likely never be published.

Third, write your editorial in a style that is clear and direct. Make sure you give plenty of examples and illustrations in your writing. Be honest and thought provoking. In general, follow news writing style by sticking to the point and avoiding over-dramatization.

Happy Friday and happy writing!

Surround Yourself with Positive Energy!

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” Mark Twain.

We’ve talked a lot about networking and the importance of building relationships with others. But, have you given much thought to the type of people you’re attracting and working with? This is definitely a situation where quality is better than quantity.

I had a situation recently that reminded me of the importance of surrounding myself with positive people and ignoring the negative. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, there are always some people that want you to fail. These are the people you need to ignore.

Surrounding yourself with positive, encouraging people will help you to reach your dreams. Unfortunately, negativity and pessimism are just as contagious as optimism and positivity.

Who is in your circle of colleagues and business associates?

You’ve probably run across your share of the negative, discouraging people in your business life. The key is focusing on those that are positive. Think about it for a minute. I’m sure there is someone in your business life that is encouraging and that you enjoy speaking with. Reach out to them on a regular basis. It can keep you on track and give you a little pick-me-up when you need it.

Other positive people will want to connect with and interact with you if you are a positive person yourself. Build your own self confidence and positive attitude by thinking and speaking positively. Be optimistic. Be open to new ideas and new challenges. Be flexible and always willing to learn. Seek out those who share your values and goals. Remove the toxicity!

Happy Weekend! Don’t forget, our big Think Spring! Blog Party begins Monday morning. There are going to be more than a dozen terrific prizes up for grabs! And, there will be insight from several positive mom entrepreneurs! It will be fun AND inspiring!!

Wordless Wednesday:: The Summer Blog Tour

I created this button for Holly and Abbey last week and couldn't wait to show it off! They announced details today about their 2010 Summer Blog Tour and I've already signed up! It's going to be a ton of fun! Have a blog? Want to get some great {free} exposure??? Visit Living my MoMent or The Work at Home Woman to find out how to get signed up! Hurry, there are a limit to 60 blogs!

P.S. Need a new button for your business or blog? Market Mommy would be happy to make it!

Are you using Twitter effectively?

Twitter is easy and it’s fast. It’s pretty much a gateway into your business, your blog, your life. It’s a great way to get more exposure. But, are you using it effectively?

First of all, do others you regularly connect with know you are on twitter? You should be telling others about it. Your twitter handle, or ID http://twitter.com/MarketMommy}, should be on your blog, on your About Us page, on anything you publish, on your facebook page, in your e-mail signature, etc.

Do you have followers? How many people are you following? One of the most obvious ways to increase your relevant followers is to first seek out others who you want to network with. Find other mom business owners that you’d like to connect with, learn from, sell to, etc. When they get the notice that you’re following them, chances are they’ll check out your profile and maybe follow you back.

In my opinion, one of the most effective ways to make twitter work for you is to make personal connections with others. Read others’ tweets and respond to them. Reply and make conversation, build friendships. You should already have multiple things in common with those you are following, use that to your advantage. You can also use direct messages to exchange e-mail addresses and other information more directly.

It’s been said that microblogging is the future of the internet. On some level I’m sure that’s true. Twitter really is a great tool and there are so many neat things you can do with it. You can search for people, find conversations about things you’re interested in, automatically follow others, track your tweets, automatically tweet your blog posts and add badges to your site.

Keep in mind that everything takes time. Building an effective network won’t happen overnight, but with a little effort twitter can be a lucrative networking tool.

The Business of Being a Mom

You've probably heard of Boogie Wipes, but you may not have heard about the Boogie Moms behind the product. If you are interested in learning all there is to know about starting a business while raising a family, they have the blog for you!

The Business of Being a Mom offers a wealth of information, resources and links. Literally, you could spend hours scanning all they have to offer! They talk about a multitude of topics; legal issues, branding, marketing, inventing, inspiration, mom guilt, confidence and much, much more.

The most impressive page, I thought, was their resources page. Everything from legal help, manufacturing help, to books, to networking sites and business planning and funding, and everything in between. Extremely helpful!

The Boogie Moms {I just love calling them that} can also be found on Facebook and Twitter!

Tuesday's Tip:: Get a Mentor

Do you have a business but don’t feel as though it’s moving forward like you want it to? Don’t feel like you’re making the money you should be making? Have you considered finding a mentor to partner with?

Jill Hart is a fellow Christian work-at-home-mom whose passion is to help other women work from home too. She is the founder of www.CWAHM.com, where she has spent the past 10 years helping other women work from home and build strong, marketable and profitable businesses. She’s also the co-author of So You Want To Be a Work at Home Mom.

“I'm dedicated to helping women like you find and maintain success in your business, your family, and your spirit,” Hart said. “What I've learned over the past 10 years is that many women want to work at home and find success and peace in their relationships with God and their families. But they don't know where to start! There is so much conflicting advice out there, it's impossible to know who you can really trust.”
Hart has now complied all of her experience to create a mentoring program entitled SuccessFul Christian Women. The program will walk you through all the steps of starting, maintaining a successful business, and balancing it with your family and your faith.

The monthly program will cover topics such as:
· How to start a business;
· How you can find customers and clients;
· Easy ways to break down your barriers to success; and
· Honoring God in your business and your life.
When you join the program, you’ll get an initial 30 minutes on the phone with Hart, in addition to the monthly calls. Monthly membership levels start at just $37/month. For more detailed information, click here.

The Possibilities of Direct Mail

Have you ever tried direct mail? Have you found it successful? Why or why not?

Mailing out postcards to your established contacts and potential customers can prove effective if done correctly. First, you need to determine what exactly you want to accomplish.

Do you want to simply build awareness about your brand? Then, a series of postcards over a given period of time might be your best bet. Potential customers need to see and be reminded of your brand consistently and repetitively. I would suggest a series of four to six postcards sent out two to three weeks apart. Each should have a slightly different message, but be consistent in look and theme.

Are you having an event or promotion you want to drive attendance to? Then one or two postcards would probably be a better option. Send out an announcement or a save the date card in advance of the event or promotion. If you really want to build interest and excitement, tease them with some information and then have them pursue more by visiting your website, for example.

A second card can and should be sent out immediately preceding your event. Or, if you are running a month-long special, for instance, send out a card at the beginning of the month and then a reminder not to miss the sale, toward the end.

In all cases, the cards should have a consistent look and feel. And, in order to reserve resources, your mailing list should be well researched and targeted.

Need help? Market Mommy is now proud to offer custom design and printing of standard and oversized postcards. Prices start at just $30 for 100 standard cards. We’d love to help you put together a successful direct mail campaign for your mom-owned business! Feel free to e-mail me for more information, or view our complete design and printing price list here.

You’ve heard me say over and over how important strong branding and consistency are. You’ve also heard me say several times that effective marketing can be done on a limited budget. Tuesday's Tip:: Funky Finds

I am a lover of unique things. That's why Funky Finds is one of my favorite places on the web. It's a great place to discover unique items, but it's also a great place to advertise! Currently, Jessica and the folks at Funky Finds, are running a 25% off special on advertising! You can find their typical rates here.

This means there are banner prices as low as $7.50/month {150x50} or $15/month {150x150}. There are many other sizes and options available. And, the more you purchase, the more you save! Discounts will be refunded via PayPal once payment has cleared.

The options at Funky Finds are endless. They have a funky newsletter, offer recipricol links, giveaways, daily finds at their blog and much more! In fact, this is the perfect time to consider selling your products through http://funkyfinds.us/theshops/. Their current promotion offers users SIX FREE MONTHS with the purchase of one month (31 days). This means you can sell your products for seven months for as low as $1.99! There is no fee per sale or per upload. How great is that?!?

Be sure to visit Funky Finds and let them know that Market Mommy sent you :)

Tuesday's Tip:: Exclusive deals

Happy Tuesday from snowy Ohio!

Today's tip relates to exclusive deals. They are a great way to build customer loyalty! You can offer them several different ways. Here are a few of my favorites::
  • Newsletter:: If you are already connecting with your customer base on a regular basis, offer them a coupon code or special promotion. They will be more likely to open your e-mails and more likely to tell their friends that they need to be on your mailing list.
  • Tweet:: There are several benefits to tweeting on Twitter. Networking with potential business partners is important, but so is building a customer base. Tweeting exclusive coupons and deals to your followers is a sure way to get more followers and more customers!
  • Facebook Fans:: They are your fans because they like your business, your products, and your services. Give them an exclusive deal and they'll be an even more loyal fan.
  • Existing customers:: Establish a referral program and offering exclusive deals to existing customers who refer their friends. By doing this you gain new and repeat customers at the same time.

The key is to make your customers, fans, followers feel special. Giving them exclusive deals and promotions does that. Having loyal customers is invaluable. Not only do they continue to purchase from you, but they also spread the word about your great products and services!

And, of course I am going to offer my loyal blog readers an exclusive offer today. :o) Use SAVE20 at checkout to save 20% on any service, listing, or advertisement from Market Mommy! {Expires Feb. 15}

Where to network?

You've heard me talk about networking a lot! I truly believe it is the best {and cheapest} marketing tool out there. Personal and local networking is definitely important, but so is online and virtual networking. It's 2010 and it's become easy and quick to connect with someone across the country or even the globe.

Wikipedia has quickly become one of my favorite online resources. And, they are not lacking when it comes to social media and online networking. Check out this comprehensive list of social networking sites!
Now, of course all of these sites aren't going to be relevant to your business or your life. And, it would be exhausting and impossible to try to engage in each one. However, I highly recommend reviewing the list and seeing what some may have to offer. This list is also great because it gives the genre of the site as well as the number of registered users.

Here is a brief list of the more popular sites::

Happy networking!

Tuesday's Tip:: Survey your audience

Who doesn't want to improve? Do you ever find yourself in a rut and not sure what to do to get out of it? Survey your audience and customer base to help generate some new ideas. Ask them what they like and what they don't. Ask them what they'd like to see added or improved. There are some great free services out there to help you, like Survey Monkey and eSurveysPro. Constant Contact has a survey feature now as well, but there is a fee.

You can link to your survey from your site or blog, add the link to your regular newsletter or send out a dedicated e-mail asking folks to fill it out. And, if you want to beef up your chances for responses, offer them an incentive! For example, everyone that completes the survey is registered to win a free product!

While we're on the topic, why don't you take two minutes and fill out a brief survey about Market Mommy. Thanks!
