Tuesday's Tip:: Demographics

Many websites and publications that offer advertising space offer an advertising kit that includes demographics. These demographics give you details about their viewers and readers. It is great insight into your potential audience.

Make sure to take these demographics into consideration before purchasing advertising. They can give you information on age, sex, income, education level, size of household, number of children, geographical location and more. This vital information can help you determine if that particular venue is a good place to spend your limited advertising dollars.

What's in a name?

A name leaves a first impression. A name gives a customer their first glimpse into your company and what you do. A name is passed by word of mouth. A name will last a lifetime.

So, needless to say, the name of your business is a pretty crucial element to your overall business plan. How in the world do you ever begin to name your business?

There are several questions you can ask yourself that may help you begin to formulate a name.

  1. What does your business do?
  2. What is unique about what you do?
  3. What type of impression do you want to leave? Classy? Quality? Bargain?

It is a good idea to come up with three to five potential names and move on from there. Then you can begin to narrow them down. You'll need to do a trademark search, to make sure you aren't infringing on anyone else's company name. You can do it yourself by visiting The United States Patent and Trademark Office. And, it's also a good idea to search the internet and see if anyone else is using the name without a trademark. Or, if your budget allows, you can always hire a lawyer to perform a comprehensive search for you.

After determining if your name(s) are available you can make your final choice. Do some research, ask others what they think. You might use these items to help eliminate some of your finalists::

  1. Is the name easy to pronouce?
  2. Is it relatively short and easy to remember?
  3. Do you have a catchy slogan in mind that will accompany it well?
  4. Is it descriptive and accurate?
  5. Do you like it?

Hopefully you've now narrowed it down to a solid, strong business name that will stand the test of time.

Some of the great features inside include:

  • Marketing Tips:: Readers submit their favorite marketing tips for a chance to be highlighted inside the newsletter.

  • Our Sponsors:: This is a way for you to learn even more about our sponsors and the sites/blogs/publications that list themselves on Market Mommy.

  • A variety of coupons, advertising deals and marketing tid-bits.

  • Up-do-date information about Market Mommy and our services.

Our next Market Mommy newsletter is scheduled to be published July 31!

Tuesday's Tip:: Referrals

Today's Tip::

Do you have a referral program?
"If you get a satisfied customer, make sure to have a referral program. They refer a friend, a family member or co-worker and they get a freebie. Most of my business is referrals and repeat customers."

Today's tip was originally featured in the Market Mommy Free E-Newsletter. (Sign up here, if you haven't already!) The tip was provided by Monique at Lil' Sugarplum.

Do you want to be featured for FREE in our newsletter? Send your best marketing tip to Dawn at info@marketmommy.com and put 'Marketing Tip' in the subject line!

Market Mommy:: The Blog

Welcome to Market Mommy:: The Blog.

In June, I launched Market Mommy as an online marketing resource for moms running their own businesses. The reception has been great. The site offers a variety of information and resources for mom entrepreneurs. However, as I've quickly come to realize, there is a lot more out there that mom business owners need to know.

Hence, the beginning of Market Mommy ~ The Blog. This blog will be able to offer up-to-date marketing information, articles, resources, tips and features that just won't fit in our newsletter or on our site.

Market Mommy offers listings of great places to advertise a mom-owned business. This blog will be able to update readers instantly when a new listing is added, so you don't miss a thing. We will also routinely feature mom business owners and their companies, offer inspriational success stories and much, much more.
